Dad's Book

I think of and Honor my Dad every 9/11 as well as every Memorial Day, Veteran's Day and, well, EVERY DAY!  Dad is Forever a Hero to me for his WWII Service to Freedom.  I spent most of my life trying to cajole him into recording his WWII story for posterity.  He refused for decades but finally agreed in the mid-90's.  This book is the result of that effort.

I learned recently that Google is going to delete a blog I made for my Dad so I created a new one.  I also uploaded his book to some fresh web hosting services so you can read it whenever you wish.

When Dad was shot down on February 21, 1944, he was taken into a brutal life as a Nazi prisoner of war.  The Nazis took his picture on February 22, 1944, and here it is.

Dad was about 150 pounds when this picture was taken.  After surviving four Nazi prison camps and the infamous Death March, he weighed 73 pounds when liberated by Patton's troops in April 1945.  Dad instilled in me a Life Long Love of history.  One of his stories that has stayed with me forever happened the day he and his fellow prisoners were liberated.  Patton's tanks rolled down the prison camp fence and the tankers threw food to Dad and his fellow prisoners.  The tankers Officers said they were going to blow the prison camp HQ to bits.  Dad went up to them and pleaded, "WAIT!  Let me get my prison record"

Yep, Dad loved history enough to risk his life running into the Nazi HQ to rifle the file cabinet to find his prison record.  I still have it in my hands!  I scanned it tonight in Dad's Honor.  That's a Love of History for ya!
